The Next Level Starts Here

Visionary Wild produces world-class photography expeditions and mentorship experiences for the passionate photographer. Featuring luminary instructors such as Jack Dykinga, John Shaw, and Pat O’Hara among others, Visionary Wild was launched by Justin Black (a protégé of the late Galen Rowell and former director of Mountain Light Photography and the International League of Conservation Photographers) to help open new pathways to photographers seeking opportunities to move their work to the next level of quality, depth, purpose and meaning.

Our Vision

What does it mean to create world-class photographic experiences that empower passionate photographers to advance their work in meaningful ways? We begin with a philosophy of generous guidance and inspiration, as well as thoughtful service to the goals of our participant community.

Visionary Wild mentors are carefully chosen from among the very finest photographers working today for their skill and generosity as teachers, welcoming and gregarious personalities, and dedication to effectively sharing the benefits of their expertise, insights, and unique vision developed over decades of professional experience. We work in settings that are rich with photographic opportunity; conducive to experimentation, discovery, and growth; and encouraging to positive group dynamics and bonding. Our expertise in workshop and expedition logistics is applied to organizing itineraries, field locations, lodging, catering, and support amenities that best serve the program in question and deliver a superb experience overall.

We also aim to help our participants photograph with purpose by identifying and facilitating outlets for their work. Partnerships with galleries, publications, conservation organizations, and other institutions provide our participant community with ways to connect with an audience and make a difference through their photographs.

Finally, to build on the bonding that occurs during photo workshops and expeditions, we’re creating mechanisms to facilitate ongoing communication, growth, richness, and vitality for our community of friends and colleagues. "We invite you to join us on the journey!" –Justin Black

Testimonials

“I have attended several workshops over the years by multiple companies that offer these services. The ones that Justin was involved in were by far the most organized, best run workshops that I have attended. This is testimony to the attention to detail and understanding and accomodation of various photographic disciplines that Justin has to offer in organizing and running a workshop.”
—Eric B.

“I have attended several workshops organized and managed by Justin. I found them to be extremely worthwhile, productive, educational and fun! The knowledge I gained about many aspects of photography has been instrumental in building my skills, vision, and business. I would (and have) highly recommend any photographer who is serious about improving their skills in this wonderful craft to strongly consider any workshop provided by Justin Black.”
—Dan H.

“I have gone on 2 photography trips with Justin through the Mountain Light Gallery in Bishop, CA. I find him to be very organized and through in his preparations, and both workshops were very beneficial. Justin has a mellow personality which adds tremendously to the atmosphere of the event. He is superbly knowledgeable about all facets of photography, is a very willing teacher and individualizes the level of help and instruction to each participant as needed. In addition, Justin has established a large network of fellow professionals through his environmental efforts. I would attend one of his workshops in a heartbeat.”
—Scott O.

“I've had the pleasure of attending several workshops that were co-instructed by Justin Black. Justin is not only a fine photographer, but compassionate, knowledgeable and well-organized. I learned a lot in Justin's workshops and enjoyed the experience.”
—Paul H.

Justin Black is a wonderful photographer, an excellent workshop organizer and leader, and just a really nice human being. I've been in three workshops and trips that Justin organized and lead, and from my participant’s perspective they all ran flawlessly. He's an excellent sounding board in the field and during image reviews, with sincere interest and cogent advice. You just can't ask for more.”
