Popular Photography’s Dan Bracaglia posted a review of the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G lens, calling it one of Nikon’s most versatile and solid-built primes. Bracaglia noted that images were, “extremely sharp and crisp...with beautiful bokeh at f/1.4.” He also touted the lens’ ergonomics, weather-seals and quality, as well as the quiet focusing, “thanks to Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor.”

Dan Havlik's review of the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G lens was posted on the pdnonline.com website, touting the prime lens. Havlik was impressed with the construction of the lens, especially the use of Nikon's Nano Crystal Coating and Super Integrated Coating. He also mentioned that the lens focuses quicker, smoother and quieter than its predecessor. Havlik said the lens "excelled when shooting wide open...the maximum f/1.4 aperture produces stellar shallow depth of field with great background blur."

Professional Photographer magazine's Ellis Vener reviewed the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G Lens. Noting the heritage of this popular prime lens, Vener said the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G Lens incorporates many of Nikon's proprietary technologies. He liked the bokeh created when using the lens wide open, as well as the crisp detail attainable with the lens. Vener touted the quality of the 85mm lens, stating: "All in all this is an exceptional 85mm lens and a joy to use while shooting portraits, details, kids sports or HD video."

Layers Magazine posted Laurie Excell’s review of the NIKKOR AF-S 85mm f/1.4G lens. Calling it the ultimate portrait lens, Excell said it is that and more. “It’s a tack-sharp telephoto lens that works splendidly in low light and has great bokeh when used wide open,” she noted. Excell added, “Overall, this is one beautiful lens that is a must have for the discerning portrait photographer or anyone in need of a fast medium telephoto.”
